Elgar happy to have big names back─── MORGAN PIEK 14:00 Mon, 31 May 2021
The West Indies cricket team has begun with their preparation ahead of the 1st Test against the Proteas in St Lucia.
The Windies have returned to full training after all of their players returned negative Covid-19 results.
Earlier the hosts were forced to train in smaller groups after the seamer, Marquino Mindley, tested positive.
Meanwhile, the Proteas departed for the Caribbean and the captain, Dean Elgar, explains that they will only start training later in the week.
“We have a three-day quarantine in which we have to have two Covid tests leading up to day four.
“Once you return your two negative tests you can leave the hotel to go and practise.
“That is pretty much why we left when we did, just to give us a few more days to adhere to the quarantine regulations and respect the process that they have put in place for us.”
Elgar added to have the senior campaigners such as Kagiso Rabada and Quinton de Kock back in the squad is very important for the team environment.
“Those players are so valuable for us and also the demand for around world cricket for them is also quite great.
“To have processed them back in your Test set-up, which for me is extremely important for all formats.
“To have their knowledge around is something that I won't be able to replicate.
“We don't have a lot of experience floating around, so those players are massive for our environment going forward.”
The 1st Test at the Daren Sammy Cricket Ground starts on the 10th.
