Harmer happy to play supporting role in New Zealand─── MORGAN PIEK 14:13 Mon, 07 Feb 2022
The Proteas spinner, Simon Harmer, is under no illusions when it comes to his chances of playing during the two-Test series against the Black Caps in New Zealand.
Harmer makes a welcome return to the Test setup, but unfortunately for him, both Tests will be played at the Hagley Oval which is the greenest and most seam-friendly wicket in New Zealand.
The 32-year-old is back in the Proteas team for the first time in six years, and he said that he understands that there are other players that are higher in the pecking order.
“The Hagley Oval is the bounciest and the greenest of the wickets in New Zealand, so the chances of playing two spinners there is low,” said the spinner who took seven wickets during his Test debut.
“I just need to make sure that I'm available when needed if something was to happen. Keshav Maharaj has done extremely well in his international career thus far.
“I'm always going to be a supporting act to him and I hope that is something I can do to the best of my ability.
“If the opportunity of playing together does arise where we need to play two spinners.
“But, for this tour, it’s just to try and really work hard and support the guys who will be playing and to also just add value where I can.”
Harmer has played in five Tests for South Africa and he has 20 wickets to his name.
The 1st Test between New Zealand and South Africa starts on 17 February.
