Earlier in the week the Black Caps seamer, Tim Southee, was quoted as saying that rivalry between New Zealand and South Africa extends far beyond a rugby field.

“In every sport, New Zealand and South Africa is a great rivalry and it's no different on the cricket field. It should be an exciting few weeks,” said the great fast bowler.

The Proteas and New Zealand don’t play against each other that often, be when they do it’s always a thrilling game of cricket.

Elgar told OFM Sport that Southee is spot-on with his assessment.

“It's a bit disappointing that we don't get to play against New Zealand a lot. I've loved the series' that I have been a part of.

“They are fierce competitors, just like South Africans. We are there to win and so are they.

“Of late their cricket has been brilliant and there is a reason why they won the World Test Championship.

“It's going to be a great test for us to match ourselves and compare ourselves to the team that is playing at their peak at the moments.

“So, ja there has also been a fearsome rivalry and that will still be there for many, many years to come.”

The 1st Test between the Black Caps and Proteas at the Hagley Oval starts on Thursday.
