Proteas Women survive Pakistan scare at World Cup─── MORGAN PIEK 14:34 Fri, 11 Mar 2022
The Proteas Women remain unbeaten at the ICC Cricket World Cup in New Zealand following a 6-run win over a defiant Pakistan in Mount Manganui on Friday.
The Proteas had a bat first at the Bay Oval and were restricted to 223/9 in their allotted 50 overs with Laura Wolvaardt scoring 75 while the captain Suné Luus contributed with 62.
Nida Dar with 55 and 40 Nahida Khan kept Pakistan in the hunt, but a batting collapse earned South Africa their second victory.
Shabnim Ismail earned the player of the match accolade with her 3/41 in 9.5 overs.
Wolvaardt said the win was a morale booster.
“We definitely would have liked 20 to 30 more runs with the bat. Coming off the field we knew that it possibly can get a bit tight at the end there.
“Know that we are not playing our best cricket and winning the tight games is a good thing.
“I guess if we were playing our best cricket and it was still tight, it would actually be worse, so definitely a big morale booster and hopefully we can made it less tight next time.”
South Africa face England on Monday in their next match. This game will also be played at the Bay Oval will get underway at 3am on Monday morning.
