Doing away with the 50-over format of the game has been a hot topic of discussion over the past few weeks and it has come under the spotlight again since the sudden and unexpected retirement from the format by Ben Stokes.

Many feel that with T20 International cricket and Test cricket there is no more space for the format.

De Kock said he certainly would like to win a 50-over World Cup with South Africa.

“There's still a future for it - you have World Cups after all.

“A lot of us still want to win a 50-over showpiece, so there is a lot to play for.

“I want to say we need to play more games, but I don't know how you're going to fit it in. It is a bit of a grey area. You cannot play too much cricket, but you also cannot play just nine ODIs in one year.

“The game is doing well for itself at the moment, the way players are going to about it, especially in terms of competitiveness.

“I’m just a cricketer and not an administrator, so it’s not really my decision.”

England and South Africa battle it out tomorrow in Bristol in the 1st T20 International.
