Markram takes over the leadership role in the T20 International team from Temba Bavuma who is focusing on the Test and One-Day International captaincy.

The new coach, Rob Walter, believes that Markram is the right man to lead the Proteas in the format.

“It wasn't a clincher - I've had my eye on Aiden from a leadership standpoint for a very long time and have watched him go about his work,” Walter explained.

“I thought he did an excellent job, which is not surprising. "I'm well aware of his leadership abilities, and I thought he marshalled the troops admirably.

“It was encouraging to see him make some sound tactical decisions regarding bowling changes. So, all I'm looking for is more of the same.

“An important part of Aiden's appointment is understanding where he is in his cricketing cycle and how many years he will hopefully devote to the Proteas.

“I think the SA20 gave us a glimpse into his leadership style and ability, so I don't think we'll see anything different from that.”

The first T20 International between the Proteas and Windies will be played on Saturday at SuperSport Park.

Play is scheduled to get underway at 14:00.
