Proteas suffer crushing defeat against India in Johannesburg─── 10:25 Mon, 18 Dec 2023
Even though the Pink Day ODI at the Wanderers in Johannesburg was sold out, fans were left frustrated as India cruised to an easy eight wicket victory yesterday afternoon.
The Proteas won the toss and chose to bat, but from the first ball the Indians were in control and bowled the Proteas out in the 28th over for a dismal 116 - their lowest ODI total at the Wanderers and their 10th lowest total in the format.
In conditions that some would say was not what you usually expect at the Wanderers, Proteas white-ball batting coach JP Duminy admitted they should have done better.
"I don't think it's one particular thing," he said. "Yes, conditions played a role but in no way can we use that as an excuse. Our execution certainly wasn't there. The intent to score - and that is something that we always speak about - was certainly there. "
Precise and relentlessly good bowling from Arshdeep Singh crippled the Protea batting attack. Singh, who going into the game had never taken an ODI wicket, took five wickets for 37 runs in his 10 overs. He was ably assisted by Avesh Khan, who took four for 27.
Going forward, Dumniy says he hopes to see the same consistency from his side as shown by India in yesterday's match. The next ODI will be played in Gqeherba tomorrow and starts at 13:00.
