ODI series level thanks to clinical performance by Proteas─── 10:06 Wed, 20 Dec 2023
Disciplined bowling and a clinical performance with the bat ensured a victory for the Proteas in the second one day international against India at St George’s Park in Gqeherba last night.
It was fireworks from the get-go with newbie to the team, Nandré Burger taking the wicket of Ruturaj Gaikwad with only the second ball of the innings. Burger went on to claim 3 for 30 from his 10 overs.
He was well supported by all of the other bowlers, including Keshav Maharaj who got 2 wickets for 51.
India was dismissed for a modest total of 211 in just 46.2 overs.
The South African batters started cautiously but finished with a flourish with Tony de Zorzi scoring a magnificent 119 not out and the Proteas winning by eight wickets.
De Zorzi said the whole atmosphere at St George’s Park helped him to achieve this milestone.
“The band definitely contributed to the atmosphere, they were going the whole day, and the crowd obviously picks up when you’re on 49 and 98. It was quite a special feeling, people singing and screaming your name,” he said.
The hosts reached their target with 45 balls remaining to tie the series at one all, with the decider in Paarl tomorrow.
The third and final ODI will be played in Paarl on Thursday.
