Protea stars back SA Under19's ahead of World Cup | News Article
Kagiso Rabada

The Proteas fast bowler, Kagiso Rabada, has thrown his weight behind the Junior Proteas ahead of the 2024 ICC U19 Cricket World Cup in South Africa.

Rabada as well as his current senior national teammate Aiden Markram were both a part of the class of 2014 which remains the only South African team to win an ICC Cricket World Cup.

The tournament will start on Friday with the bulk of the matches set to be played in Central South Africa.

“The message that I would like to give them is that it is a huge privilege and honour to represent your country. As an individual, it’s a big, big stage where you can announce yourself and prove you can dominate on the world stage. You can expect to see some future stars and amongst those future stars will be some future greats,” Rabada said.

The Proteas fast bowler, Anrich Nortjé, has stressed the importance of sticking to the basics during the tournament.  Five-time champions, India, will be the team to beat, while the Junior Proteas will be attempting to win just a second time.

There has been a lot of noise surrounding the South African camp, and Nortjé who is a World Cup ambassador said it’s important to just stick to what they do best.

“Stay positive, work really hard, try to enjoy every moment and take everything in.  It’s a brilliant opportunity and a big platform with great people around you. Millions are going to be watching, so take it all in and enjoy every moment,” Nortje said.

On Friday at 10:00, Irelandwill face the USA in Bloemfontein and South Africa will take on the Windies in Potchefstroom.
