Williamson guides Black Caps to historic Test series win─── MORGAN PIEK 09:24 Fri, 16 Feb 2024
The Black Caps of New Zealand have won their first-ever Test series against the Proteas with a 2-0 clean sweep.
The Black Caps beat the Proteas by seven wickets in Hamilton on Friday to claim the second Test and in the process, they wrote their own piece of cricket history.
New Zealand needed just 267-runs in their second innings to win the Test and on Friday they resumed their overnight score on 40/1.
Kane Williamson scored 133 not out for his third ton of the series as they chased down the target and he was supported well by Will Young who scored 60 not out.
South Africa would have felt that they were in for a shout early on Friday after Zubayr Hamza caught Tom Latham out for 30 off the bowling of Dane Piedt with the score on 53.
Piedt went on to claim the wicket of Rachin Ravindra for 20 and at 117/3 there would have still been some belief in a win, but the unbeaten 152-run partnership for the fourth wicket between Williamson and Young took the game away.
The Free State spinner, Piedt, has a wonderful Test with the ball by taking 3/93 in the second innings to add to his 5/119 in the first innings.
The Kiwi seamer, William O'Rourke was named the Player of the Match for his nine wickets in the Test. O'Rourke returned fine figures of 4/59 and 5/34, while Williamson was named as the Player of the Series for his 403-runs in Mount Maunganui and Hamilton.
This was the 18th Test series in the 90-year history between New Zealand and South Africa in Test cricket.
