The Proteas are back in action at the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup on Friday when they face co-hosts Sri Lanka in Colombo.

While the Sri Lankans currently sit second from the bottom of the log, the encounter promises to be a tricky one for South Africa, who are targeting a fourth consecutive win. A victory would see the Proteas move up to second on the log, ahead of England.

Apart from contending with Sri Lanka’s strong spin attack and star batter Chamari Athapaththu, the weather could also play a major role. Three matches in Colombo have already been rained out, and more showers are forecast for Friday – far from ideal for the Proteas, who still have to face Pakistan and defending champions Australia.

Despite the uncertainty, the Proteas are focused on controlling what they can. In-form spinner Nonkululeko Mlaba said Sri Lanka can never be underestimated, especially in their home conditions.

“I just feel like every team is tough to play against. We faced Sri Lanka in a tri-series and also at home, and they beat us in a few games,” said Mlaba.

“They definitely have a good side – their spinners are excellent, and Athapaththu is a real match-winner for them. We don’t underestimate anyone; we just focus on our own game and give our best.”

Mlaba added that their recent experience against Sri Lanka is valuable, and the Proteas have clear plans in place. “As a team, we’ve learned a lot about their players, especially me as a bowler. I know their strengths and weaknesses, and that helps me to plan my spells better,” she explained.

She also reflected on the team’s recent challenges in closing out games against India and Bangladesh, saying it’s part of the learning curve. “That’s part of the game. Sometimes you start well and then lose momentum here and there. The key is to regroup as a team, stay focused, and finish strong,” she said.

“I’ve watched a lot of matches – other teams go through the same thing. It’s just cricket.”

Friday’s match between Sri Lanka and the Proteas at the R. Premadasa Stadium is scheduled to start at 11:30.
