The Mangaung Oval in Bloemfontein is buzzing with activity as preparations ramp up for the upcoming T20 International between the Proteas Women and Pakistan.

The Proteas Women, who are three-time consecutive World Cup finalists - twice in the ICC Women's T20 World Cup and once in the ICC Women's Cricket World Cup - return to the City of Roses for the first time since December 2024, when they faced England women's national cricket team in a once-off Test.

For Free State Cricket, hosting the opening WODI is a major occasion. International fixtures are few and far between in Bloemfontein, and with the city set to play a hosting role in the 2027 ICC Men's Cricket World Cup, the match serves as an important build-up.

A strong crowd is expected on Sunday. By Friday morning, more than 4,500 tickets had already been sold, and if current trends continue, a full house looks likely. Traditionally, ticket sales tend to double on match day, adding to the anticipation of a vibrant atmosphere.

Chief Executive Officer of Free State Cricket, Johan van Heerden, told OFM Sport that excitement is building steadily.

“We’re absolutely thrilled to host the Proteas Women,” said Van Heerden.

“The team had a strong T20 International series against Pakistan - despite slipping up in the final game - and they’re in a really good space.

“I’ve watched their training over the past two days, and there’s some serious talent in that group. The support has also been fantastic, with around 4,500 tickets already sold, and we expect that to grow significantly on match day.

“We always say that what’s sold before the game can double on the day, so we’re preparing for a full house.”

He added that the fixture also offers valuable preparation ahead of the 2027 World Cup.

“It’s a great build-up for us with the World Cup approaching. It gives us a chance to dust off the cobwebs when it comes to hosting international cricket. It’s special for us to welcome and host a team of this calibre.”

For several members of the Proteas setup, the match marks something of a homecoming. Head coach Mandla Mashimbyi, assistant coach Dillon du Preez, as well as players Annerie Dercksen and Masabata Klaas, all have strong ties to Free State cricket.

Van Heerden added that the team received a warm Free State welcome earlier in the week, with plenty of local flavour.

“Many of the players know the town well, and it’s been special hosting them - from a relaxed braai to proper cricket chats. One of the talking points has been the sheer size of the field, which is regarded as one of the biggest in the world.

“We’ve pushed the boundary out to 60 metres, so they’ll need to hit a bit harder. But from what we’ve seen in training, they’re more than capable.

“We’re looking forward to a great game - even with a bit of afternoon rain expected.”

Sunday’s match at Mangaung Oval is scheduled to get underway at 10:00.
