It is arguably one of Test cricket’s greatest upsets ever and a massive victory for Bangladesh in the 26 years they have competed in Test cricket.

Bangladesh was patient in their approach and carefully laid the groundwork for their victory by bowling Australia out for 198 in the first innings. They went on to put a massive 426 on the scoreboard in their first innings. 

Bangladesh then went on to bowl the hosts out for 284 in their second innings, needing only 57 to win, and the writing was basically on the wall. They lost Tanzid Hasan in the second over when he was bowled for a duck by Josh Hazelwood, but Shadman Islam (25 not out) and Mominul Haque (30 not out) calmly batted to reach the required runs in just over 14 overs.

‘The biggest win so far for Bangladesh’

Seamer Hasan Mahmud was named player of the match after claiming 6/55 in the first innings and 3/56 in the second.

“This is the biggest win so far for Bangladesh in any format,” captain Najmul Hossain Shanto said after the match.

“Going forward, we want to do something special in the future. I’m very happy, proud of myself and the way the boys played. We did a lot of hard work.”

Shanto also hailed Tanzid Hasan’s maiden century in only his second Test, and the way the tail hung around for 52.3 overs to give Bangladesh 426 in the first innings.

Australia’s captain Pat Cummins said the team had no excuses for a bad performance and they were simply outplayed in all facets.

“I thought our preparation was pretty much spot-on. I thought it was excellent, so, yeah, no excuses,” Cummins said at the post-match presentation. “They played really well. We’ve got to try and find a way to bat a little bit longer than we did, and then just couldn’t penetrate with the ball.”

The second test between the two countries is on Saturday (22/8) at the Great Barrier Reef Arena in Mackay.
