While South Africa took a 1-0 lead in the series, it was opening batter Jordan Hermann, making his ODI debut, who stole the show and grabbed the headlines.

Hermann smashed a sensational 150 runs to equal the joint-highest score by a batter on ODI debut. In doing so, he joined fellow South African and teammate Matthew Breetzke, who achieved the feat against New Zealand.

Hermann, however, officially tops the list after reaching his 150 off 126 balls, while Breetzke faced 148 deliveries for his score against the Black Caps.

Namibia won the toss and opted to bowl first, a decision they would soon come to regret. The Proteas piled on 348/6 in their allotted 50 overs, with Hermann producing a breathtaking knock that included 17 fours and three sixes.

Tony de Zorzi provided solid support with a composed 72 off 84 balls, while Corbin Bosch added a valuable unbeaten 39 off just 24 deliveries.

Ruben Trumpelmann was Namibia's standout bowler by some distance, finishing with excellent figures of 4/68 in his 10 overs.

The Namibian run chase was disrupted by rain on two occasions, and when play eventually resumed, the hosts were set a revised target of 262 runs from 31 overs.

Despite a valiant 34 off 60 balls from Malan Kruger and a brisk 31 off 20 deliveries by JJ Smit, Namibia could only reach 162/8 in their allotted overs.

Spinner Prenelan Subrayen was the pick of the South African bowlers, claiming an impressive 4/29 in his six overs, while Kwena Maphaka chipped in with 2/32. Duan Jansen was particularly economical, conceding just 13 runs in his six overs while taking one wicket.

Reflecting on his remarkable debut, Hermann said being able to put the Proteas in a position to win made the achievement even more special.

“Yeah, it’s incredibly special. I think my whole life I’ve been taught, ‘Don’t just get a hundred’. You obviously try to push it further and further, and I think the conditions were asking us to not just get a hundred, but push on a bit.

“Obviously, we didn’t want to give Namibia a sniff because I feel they’re a good team and they can get some leverage to work with. We just tried to kill all types of any sense of bad patches of play they could capitalise on.

“So, no, I think I’m chuffed that I could do that and get us in a winning position.

“I think it wasn’t as free-flowing as it could have been, as we’re probably known for. But I think 350 was still a good score, given we were asked to bat first.

“So, yeah, hopefully we can top that. If we do, we’re preparing very well. It’ll be a bit difficult, but it’s a good team. We don’t underestimate them, so, yeah, it’ll be good if we can replicate that.”

The second ODI between Namibia and South Africa at the Namibia Cricket Ground will be played on Friday, with the first ball scheduled to be bowled at 9:30.
