Unions plead for safe working conditions in government buildings─── 08:01 Thu, 24 Jan 2019
Department of Health workers have raised safety concerns during a protest outside their workplace.
The protesting workers are affiliated to trade unions Nehawu and the Public Servants Association of South Africa.
Last year, the Civitas Building in Pretoria was deemed unsafe by the Department of Labour.
Some of the issues raised include problems with ventilation and sprinkler systems.
Safety issues have forced the closure of a number of government buildings in recent months.
In September, three firefighters died in a blaze at a non-compliant building.
The PSA's Reuben Maleka said Elizabeth Nkosi's death was linked to the conditions of the building and the authorities were aware of the safety concerns.
Maleka said promises were made to unions that measures would be taken to solve the problem within three months but no steps have gone forward.
"Our members are willing to work, find alternative accommodation," Maleka pled.
