Dutch Reformed Church loses court battle over same-sex unions─── 17:54 Fri, 08 Mar 2019
The North Gauteng High Court has set aside the Dutch Reformed Church's decision not to recognise gay marriages.
The applicants were unhappy about the church’s move to reverse its decision on same-sex unions.
In 2015, the church gave its blessing to same-sex marriages but officials changed their minds a year later saying these relationships do not meet Christian guidelines.
They also decided that homosexual people could become ministers only if they are celibate.
Same-sex marriage has been legal in South Africa since the Civil Union Act came into force in 2006.
