The African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) in the Free State has made a U-turn on its earlier plans to burn the investigative journalist Pieter-Louis Myburgh’s book titled ‘Gangster State: Unravelling Ace Magashule’s web of capture’.

This after the Provincial Chairperson of the youth league on Tuesday posted on Facebook that they planned to burn Myburgh's book at the Mangaung dumping site in the south on 15 April 2019 at 17h00. The youth league spokesperson, Sello Peterson, says after engaging with the ANC leadership, the youth league was convinced to not proceed with their plans to burn the book. This in the wake of a book launch disruption in Sandton on Tuesday night by people wearing ANC T-shirts. Peterson says their decision to burn the book was to protect the principal and leadership of the party from what he says is an attempt by the journalist to assassinate Magashule’s character.

He adds that the book is filled with propaganda and says the timing of the launch was planned to sway voters into believing that the ANC is a corrupt party with immoral leadership. Peterson says Myburgh has one intention - to spew propaganda against the ANC. He says the journalist’s decision to launch the book a few weeks before the general election on 8 May was well-planned to influence people to not vote for the ruling party. In a Facebook post, Mohale said they are unapologetic about their support of Magashule, who he says is a tried and tested product of the ANC, nurtured, grilled and baptised in the traditions and values of the movement.
