What’s new this flu season? | News Article

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has included the FluMist nasal spray flu vaccine in its annual flu vaccine recommendations.

The CDC now says “no preference is expressed for any one vaccine type”.

This season, people have the option of getting the traditional flu shot in a nasal spray. Children younger than 6 months should not get the flu vaccine. The nasal spray vaccine is approved for use in people 2 years through to 49 years of age, however, it is not recommended for anyone who has a severe, life-threatening allergy.

CDC also updates totals for deaths and hospitalisations during the flu season. Overall vaccine effectiveness (VE) for the flu shot is 47% for the current season, with 46% effectiveness against this year's dominant strain.

It takes up to two weeks to build immunity after a flu shot, but you can benefit from the vaccine even if you get it after the flu season starts.

This product is unfortunately not yet available in South Africa.
