WC government to continue with school feeding scheme─── 12:10 Tue, 07 Apr 2020
Western Cape Education MEC Debbie Schaefer says provincial school feeding schemes will continue despite the lockdown.
Schaefer says the Provincial Treasury has allocated R18 million to the department to continue with the feeding scheme.
“What we are planning to do is do what we normally do, so we normally have food at schools which is prepared by food handlers at the school. So our intentions is to let them prepare the food there then we will be able to allocate it to the learners in a sort of take-away parcel of some sort.”
She adds that over 400 000 pupils are beneficiaries of the feeding scheme.
“It will service every one of our schools where learners are receiving the nutrition programme so its about 1010 of our schools and it normally feeds about 482 000 of our learners and we are going to do the best that we can to get through as many of those learners as we can.”
