The Bloemfontein professional Wilco Nienaber got off to a solid start in the opening round of the BMW International Open at the München Eichenried Golf Club in Germany on the DP World Tour on Thursday.

Nienaber carded a first round of six-under-par 66 for a share of fourth along with compatriot Daniel van Tonder.

Nienaber sank five birdies during his round while he also recorded an eagle on the par-five sixth. His only blemish in the round was bogey on the first hole.

Van Tonder in his turn sank seven birdies, but recorded a bogey on the par-four seventh.

The next best South African in the field is another Bloemfonteiner, Dean Burmester, who shot an opening round of three-under-par 69.

Burmester who these days resides in George, sank five birdies, however, he recorded bogeys on the third and eighth holes.

The pair are four shots off of the lead, with Haotong Li of China carding a cracking opening round of ten-under-par 62.

Nienaber will be on the tee at 13:30 this afternoon for his second round.
