OFM’s very own Odette de Mascot has made loads of lists, and checked all of them twice to help make your holidays better then nice….

It is the season for celebration, so let us celebrate… baking soda. That’s right, according to ‘date-and-time.com’, 30 December is ‘Bicarbonate of Soda Day’. The origins of this holiday are unknown, but there are of a couple of fun uses for baking soda.

And, here are some for the kids… Celebrate bicarbonate of soda day by making your own bath bombs. Other than baking soda, all you will need is citric acid, corn starch, Epsom salts and vegetable oil.

Mix all these ingredients together and let it dry in a mould, and you’ll have your own bath bombs in no time.

No child can resist the stickiness of slime, why not let them make their own?

According to wikihow.com, you only have to mix baking soda and dishwashing liquid to make your own slime. But, be careful, it gets a little messy!

If you can’t remember the last time you had sherbet, now is the time to be nostalgic and make yourself some. According to thoughtco.com, all you need to do is to mix baking soda, citric acid and icing sugar together.

Find the directions to create your own bicarbonate of soda fun below:

Bath bombs

Odette de Mascot tried this one herself, in fact, she tried two recipes and this one gave the best results:

Ingredients:

1 cup baking soda

½ cup Epsom salt

½ cup corn starch

½ citric acid

2.5 tbsp vegetable oil (Odette used coconut oil)

1 tbsp water

2 tsp essential oil (Odette used vanilla essence instead)

4-6 drops food colouring

moulds

Directions:

1.         Mix all the dry ingredients together in a large bowl and use a whisk to make sure the mixture is clump-free. If you’re feeling frisky, you can add some glitter, just be sure to use biodegradable glitter instead of regular craft glitter, because regular glitter is harmful to ocean life.

2.         Mix all the wet ingredients together, the amount of fragrance that you’d like to add is up to you, Odette only used a teaspoon of vanilla essence.

3.         Slowly add the liquid to the dry mixture, VERY SLOWLY. Use about a teaspoon at a time and whisk in between. Slow down if the mixture starts to fizz, if it fizzes now, the end-product won’t fizz in the bath. By now the mixture should look like damp sand.

4.         Time to stuff the mixture into your moulds, if you don’t have a bath bomb mould, you can use silicone moulds. Press the mixture down firmly into your moulds and work quickly before the mixture dries out.

5.         Let it dry overnight.

6.         Draw yourself a bath, throw the bath bomb into the tub and enjoy.

Slime

Ingredients:

1 cup baking soda
 ¼ cup dishwashing liquid
 1 drop food colouring

Directions:

  1. Pour the baking soda in a bowl.
  2. Add the dishwashing liquid little by little while whisking the mix.
  3. Continue whisking until you reach the desired texture then add food colouring.
  4. Enjoy playing with your slime. Be careful, it will get messy

Sherbet

Ingredients:

6 teaspoons citric acid powder
 3 tablespoons baking soda
 4 tablespoons icing sugar

Directions:

  1. If your citric acid comes as large crystals rather than as a powder, you might want to crush it with a spoon.
  2. Mix all the ingredients together.
  3. Store your sherbet in a dry place like a zip-lock bag
  4. Enjoy your homemade sherbet.
