Start 2020 stress free | News Article

Ahh, New Year’s…. It’s the end of the old and beginning of the new. Don’t let stress ruin your celebration, here are a few easy steps on how to deal with stress.

Step 1: According to clinical psychologist, Dr Ester de Beer, it is crucial to admit to yourself that you are stressing.

Step 2: Breathe. ‘Medical-news-today.com’ suggests the 4-7-8 breathing method, which involves breathing in for 4 seconds, holding your breath for 7 seconds and exhaling through 8 seconds.

Let’s give it a try: breathe in 2.. 3.. 4.. hold: 2.. 3.. 4.. 5.. 6.. 7.. and breathe out: 2.. 3.. 4.. 5..6..7..8.

Step 3: Laugh it out. Psychologist, Dr Leonie Moolman suggests that laughing helps with relaxation, makes you feel lighter, encourages optimism and acts as a distraction.

These are some easy on-the-go tips on stressing less, but if you want to be more committed to stressing less, Dr De Beer has 10 extra tips on stressing less;

1.  Know Yourself.  Know what you need to relax and communicate that to the people with you.  Some people get energised by socialising with loud music playing and everyone talking at the same time.  For others with more introverted natures, or who are highly sensitive to sensory stimuli, such a situation can be a nightmare and emotionally very draining and tiring.  What they need to relax is to seek silence and time spent alone or with one close friend or relative, for example by taking a long walk on a quiet beach.

2. Do not take others’ behaviour personally.  If a relative leaves the company to have a nap alone in their room, respect the person's wish for privacy and do not force everyone to take part in all social activities. Do not view it as rejection.

3. Rest and get enough sleep.  Fatigue makes a person more vulnerable to stress, moodiness and anxiety.  Never apologise for your need for sleep.  People have different optimal amounts of sleep they need.  Do not try and keep up with people, who require less sleep than you.  Take naps during the day if your sleep at night was disturbed by noise or adjustment to a new environment.

4. Slow Down.  Whenever you feel that someone is pressing your emotional buttons, exhale, and then breathe in slowly (imagine there is a balloon in your stomach which gets bigger while you breathe in the air) and exhale even slower while pulling in your stomach and repeat three times before responding.

5. Never Argue with a person under the influence of alcohol, or who has diffused physiological arousal, which is indicated by being emotionally upset, like angry, agitated, irritable, etc.  Remove yourself from the situation till the person has calmed down, even if you have to wait till after a good night’s sleep.

6.  Do Not Gossip or get involved in disagreements between two other people.  When someone complain to you about someone else’s behaviour, encourage them to rather speak directly to the other person.  Avoid being a go-between.

7. Do not make assumptions.  People come from different sub-cultures.  Do not misinterpret their behaviour.  People grew up with different traditions, even if they share the same ethnic group, language and religion.

8.  Avoid heated political discussions.  Attitudes are hard to change.  Do not spend your precious holiday time on futile arguments.

9.  People generally enjoy and remember activities they do more than receiving gifts.  Be open to new experiences.  If you are not the adventurous type, who wants to do horse riding or bungee jumping, go along as a spectator or photographer.  Do not let yourself be bullied into something you do not feel comfortable with.  However, often people do not regret facing their fears and trying something new.

10.  Be Grateful for the opportunity to be on holiday.  Do not spend money you do not have.
