Goodman Gallery appeals Spear ruling─── 06:07 Wed, 11 Jul 2012

Cape Town - The Goodman Gallery is appealing the classification of "The Spear" painting as unsuitable for under-16s.
Last month, the Film and Publications Board (FPB) gave artist Brett Murray's painting a 16N rating. This means children under the age of 16 should not have access to the artwork, because it displays nudity.
Gallery spokesperson Lara Koseff said the grounds for appealing the classification include, among others, that the FPB had not given sufficient regard to the constitutionally protected expression of the artist. The painting depicts President Jacob Zuma with exposed genitals.
City Press, which originally published the picture in its newspaper and on its website, also has the right to appeal to the FPB's appeal tribunal.
