Nine people died and two were injured when a bakkie veered out of control, overturned and crashed in a river on the N11, between Middelburg and Groblersdal, the Mpumalanga community safety department said on Saturday.
The accident happened near Kranskop at 11pm on Friday, spokesman Joseph Mabuza said in a statement.
Some of the passengers were travelling in the back of the bakkie, he said.

Community Safety MEC Vusi Shongwe urged motorists to drive carefully and to remain mindful of how different conditions affected their driving.
"Shongwe has also called on law enforcement to show zero tolerance to any reckless and negligent driving this festive season and beyond in order to save lives," Mabuza said.
