#WaterCrisis: Communities called to clean up rivers | News Article

With less than two weeks to Nelson Mandela’s birthday, the Department of Water and Sanitation is appealing to South Africans to preserve water.

The department is calling on all communities to refrain from polluting water streams.

Departmental spokesperson, Sputnik Ratau, says the department has embarked on a Clear River campaign to encourage the public to play an active role in cleaning up water resources. He says water remains a scarce commodity and needs to be preserved at all times.

The department has, since 2016, dedicated the month of July, referred to by many as Madiba Month, to cleaning up rivers, dams and all water streams. The call by the department comes as many towns in the Free State are still battling with water supply.

Over the weekend, OFM News reported on how residents in the towns of Welkom and Ventersburg expressed concerns over the lack of water provision. One resident, Lynette Pretorius, told OFM News how they have been without water for almost a week and how the lack of it poses a health risk to them many including the elderly, as they are unable to wash their hands.
