This year’s Electoral Commission (IEC) voter registrations in the Free State has taken an unexpected turn following a few detours along the registration process.

The IEC spokesperson in the Free State, Mmabatho Rasengane, tells OFM News one of their stations in Hoopstad has been interrupted by a protest. Rasengane says the protest was about residential addresses that the municipality has given to the community.

“If you don’t vote, you don’t have a voice, you don’t voice your opinion, needs or anything. So, if you decide to stay away from voting you might find yourself in a situation that if you want services, you are unable to get it, or if you have complaints, you are unable to voice out those complaints because who will you complain to if you have not put them into power,” says Rasengane.

Rasengane says they have had a slow morning with registrations.

She says they have record 2 106 registrations this morning. Eight of the registrations are from people aged 16 and 17. Those aged between 18 to 21 recorded 134 registrations, and 1 964 registrations were from people from 21 years and above.

She says there are 1 564 stations across the Free State province.
