Minister Angie Motshekga says schools in provinces such as Limpopo, Free State, North West, Northern Cape, and the Eastern Cape need to be upgraded. In a report, she indicates that online learning in these provinces also needs to be scaled up. In a report focused on the implementation of online learning, Motshekga confirms Information Communication Technology (ICT) equipment must be rolled out at schools, and teachers trained on virtual teaching techniques. 

Motshekga says plans are afoot to promote remote learning in these provinces.

She highlights that "the Covid-19 pandemic has adversely affected the basic education sector" and those remote learning interventions had to be implemented.

She says several schools in Limpopo, Mpumalanga, and the Free State, among others, are already making use of local radio stations, but more needs to be done to improve remote learning and teaching.

Motshekga confirms they are in talks with mobile network operators to ensure infrastructure development and internet connectivity in rural provinces.
