The South African men’s hockey team is in high spirits after qualifying for the semi-finals of the FIH Men’s Series Finals in Bhubaneswar, India.

South Africa beat Russia 2-1 on Wednesday night in the quarter-finals to set up a final four fixture with the USA tomorrow.

The USA is the very same team the Proteas lost 2-0 to in their first match of the tournament.

The South African goalkeeper, Rassie Pieterse, told OFM Sport that they know what to expect from the Americans.

“It was a gutsy performance by the guys against Russia.

“We did start the tournament a little on the slow side, but we knew that as it progressed we would get into it.

“With our current program, we don’t have a lot of time to prepare so it takes us one or two games to get into it.

“In the pool game against the USA they beat us 2-0, and we were disappointed with that as we had all the stats in our favour.

“Now we always know what to expect from them so we can prepare around that.

“After the win against Russia our confidence has been given a boast, and we also know the gravity of the game against the USA. It is a must win game and we are quite excited to go out there and hopefully come out on top.

“Most of all, the support from back home has been incredible, and the messages we have been receiving has been unreal.

“So thank you for all of the support.”

The host India will face Japan in the second semi-final.
