Kimberley Olympian returning home with fractured pelvis─── MORGAN PIEK 14:53 Mon, 26 Jul 2021
The skateboarder from Kimberley, Boipelo Awuah, has been forced to withdraw from the Olympic Games in Tokyo and will be returning to South Africa.
The 15-year-old, who is the youngest member of Team South Africa, fractured her pelvis while training for the women’s street competition.
The teenager has been ordered to rest for at least six weeks.
Awuah told TeamSA that while it was disappointing not being able to compete, but the experience has been something else.
“It’s okay and manageable.
“Okay, no it is really sore, more so when I’m standing up or walking.
“To say that I was just selected to represent South Africa at the Olympics was just amazing. It’s sad that I didn’t actually get to compete, but just being here and seeing all the facilities and soaking up the atmosphere has been something else.
“There’s not much they can do for now and as long as it doesn’t snap, I’ll be okay.
“But I have to sleep on my back and spend time lying down. Standing up and walking hurts.”
Meanwhile her teammate, Brandon Valjalo, is also returning home after breaking his wrist. This did, however, not stop him from competing in the men’s street competition. Valjalo still managed to finished 18th in his discipline.
The pair will return to South Africa on Tuesday.
