Blignaut into Olympic shot put final─── MORGAN PIEK 09:18 Wed, 04 Aug 2021
South Africa’s Kyle Blignaut is into the final of the men’s shot put at the Olympic Games in Tokyo. Blignaut secured his spot among the last 12 with a heave of 20.97m during the B qualification round.
Unfortunately, the other South African, Jason van Rooyen, didn't make the final after he could just manage 20.29m in the A qualification.
Blignaut says his sights are on at least a top six finish.
"I'm aiming for middle 21's, which should get a you a top six and you never know, maybe a medal. I know that in 2016 a 21.30m medaled.
"So, if I can get anywhere about a 21.30, I will be happy with it.
"On a good day, I can get up to a metre and on a modest day I can get up maybe half a metre on tonight, but on a great day I can go to 22m."
Thursday’s final will get underway at 4:05am.
