Proteas successfully defend Africa Netball Cup─── MORGAN PIEK 15:03 Tue, 16 Nov 2021
The Proteas have retained the Africa Netball Cup after beating the hosts, Namibia, 65-39 in Windhoek on Tuesday morning.
South Africa went through to the tournament unbeaten with eight wins from their eight games to reaffirm their status as the number one team in Africa.
While the score line suggests South Africa had a comfortable victory, Namibia, put up a strong fight and there were stages in the game where they impressed.
Even more impressive is the fact that some of the stalwarts of the sport in South Africa, such as the Free State great, Karla Pretorius, did not compete in the tournament.
The Proteas assistant coach, Dumisani Chauke, said the tournament gave the youngsters valuable experience and that as a team they delighted that they took their opportunities.
“We knew that Namibia will give us a run for our money, we understood that they will bring their A game here today and we needed to be ready for that.
“I am really proud of how the girls rallied together and made sure that they deliver for the team.
“Whoever we put in today understood what the assignment was, regardless of where you come from the KPI’s do not change.
“We needed to make sure that we deliver.
The Proteas will play in the Quad Series again early next year.
