Leclerc's good start to the season continues down-under─── MORGAN PIEK 09:23 Mon, 11 Apr 2022
Ferrari's Charles Leclerc continued his good start to the Formula 1 season by winning the Australian Grand Prix at Albert Park on Sunday.
The 24-year-old Monacan driver led from start to finish for his second win of the season and he now leads the drivers’ standings on 71 points.
For the reigning world champion, Max Verstappen, it was another weekend he would like to forget as soon as possible, after his car failed on him for a second time in three races and once again, he was forced to retire while in a strong position.
His Red Bull teammate, Sergio Perez, finished in second while the new Mercedes driver, George Russell, rounded off the podium.
Following his win in Melbourne, Leclerc highlighted that the season has just begun and there is still a lot of racing to be done before he can even think of a maiden world title.
“Obviously we only had the third race so it's difficult to think about the championship,” Leclerc the potential title contender said after his second win of the season.
“To be honest, we've got a very strong car, a very reliable car too.
“I hope it continues like this and if it does, then we probably have chances for the championship, which obviously makes me smile after the last two years that have been difficult for the team and obviously for myself.
“It's great to be back in this position.”
The next stop for the drivers will be the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix at Imola on 24 April.
