Van Niekerk withdraws from SA Champs─── MORGAN PIEK 10:52 Thu, 21 Apr 2022
The 400m world record holder, Wayde van Niekerk, has pulled out of the Senior South African Championships again.
The former Olympic and world champion was set to run in the 100m and 200m for men at the national championships in Cape Town, but withdrew from the event due to a hamstring injury.
Athletes taking part in the flagship event of South Africa athletics will be looking to secure qualification for this year's World Championship in Eugene, Orgon and Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England.
Van Niekerk expressed his disappointment in not being able to compete in the city of his birth this week.
“I'm disappointed to have to withdraw from the national championships. I was excited to compete this week, but unfortunately things have not been going my way the last few weeks.
“But my spirits are still high and I'm going to keep putting in the hard work. For now, I'm looking forward to getting back to work and doing what needs to be done.
“Thanks to everyone for the love and support, and I'm looking forward to the rest of the season.”
Van Niekerk, who is based in the USA now, was due to run under the banner of Boland.
