Van Niekerk clocked the second fastest time in the heats in 45.18 seconds, which was only bettered by Bayapo Ndori of Botswana who ran a 44.87 personal best.

Van Niekerk will run in lane four of the third semi-final and he will have stiff opposition from Isaac Makwala of Botswana.

Van Niekerk said he is still motivated by a third gold in the event.

“Once you’ve tasted it, you always want it,” said Van Niekerk.

“I’ve achieved gold three times at major championships, so I know it’s possible and I know the feeling.

“That’s what you want, and what you’re striving towards, but every championship deserves respect.

“I’m just allowing myself to gradually go through the rounds, and we’ll see what happens.”

Van Niekerk will be in action at 4:15 on Thursday morning.
