Proteas geared for Quad Series─── MORGAN PIEK 07:43 Fri, 20 Jan 2023
The Proteas are eager to go ahead with the 2023 Quad Series that gets under way in Cape Town on Saturday.
The 5th-ranked South Africa can expect a tough netball tournament as they face the world's top three teams in Australia, New Zealand and England. South Africa will open their campaign against the Silver Ferns, while the Diamonds of Australia will take on the Roses.
The Proteas captain, Bongi Msomi, who will be playing in her record-extending 155th Test, said they are excited.
"The girls are really pumped and ready to take it to court," said the player, who will also be celebrating her 35th birthday on Saturday.
"It is early in the year; however, the spirits are quite high. The series is very important for us because we need to see how far we are in terms of readiness, especially for the World Cup."
The Proteas coach, Norma Plummer, highlighted the importance of the series, especially considering that the World Cup will be played in South Africa later in the year.
"We have a combination of good players, both experienced and young," said the Australian tactician.
"We just need to make sure that we manage them well going into the series and make sure that we get the best from everyone.
"The Quad is an important one, especially during a World Cup year, and because we are also playing teams that are ranked above us, we will get to punch above our own weight. I think we have a chance to cause a few upsets."
The Proteas and Silver Ferns will battle it out at 16:00 on Saturday afternoon, while at 18:00 Australia will be up against England.
