Schoenmaker into World Championships final─── MORGAN PIEK 08:27 Tue, 25 Jul 2023
South Africa's golden girl of swimming, Tatjana Schoenmaker, will be swimming in the final of the women's 100m breaststroke on Tuesday at the FIFA World Aquatics Championships in Fukuoka, Japan.
On Monday the Olympic and Commonwealth Games silver medallist in the event booked lane three in the final by clocking the third fastest time in the semi-finals.
During the second semi-final Schoenmaker touched the wall in 1:05.53, which was 0.44 seconds off the pace of Ruta Meilutyte of Lithuania.
After securing he playing in the final, Schoenmaker, was delighted to record her fastest time since the Tokyo Olympics, but also felt there are a few small work-ons.
“I think because I had such a good swim in the morning I was surprised, I felt good, I was obviously hoping I had a good one, but I think it just took the pressure off as well.
“It was my fastest time since the Olympics as well, so I was very happy with that, that just meant I could enjoy the racing in the semi and the final because I got the time already in the heats, my best time so far in terms of the season.
“I could work on a few little things that I can change in the final in terms of the small technical things so there’s definitely space for improvement, and then it’s just having a good rest and resting well for tomorrow night.”
During the 2019 World Championhips in Gwangju, South Korea, Schoenmaker finished in sixth.
Tuesday afternoon's 100m breaststroke final gets underway this afternoon at 14:45.
