It was not to be for Wayde van Niekerk at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest. The world record holder missed out on a medal at the world championships again last night by finishing last in the final of the 400m sprint.
The former Free State sprinter ran out of steam in the closing stages of the race to finish in seventh in a time of 45.11 sec, while Kirani James was disqualified.
Van Niekerk said he needs to take responsibility for his performance.
“To talk you through my emotions right now - it was very frustrating and I am disappointed,” said the former Olympic champion.
“I have to full responsibility - I'm the one that lined up and I am the one who put the effort in.
“We all know it is well off par from what I can do and comparing to the medallists it not a good performance at all.”
Antonio Watson of Jamaica won the gold in 44.22 sec, Matthew Hudson-Smith taking silver, while Quincy Hall of the USA claimed the bronze.
