Piastri takes pole for the Spanish Grand Prix─── MORGAN PIEK 09:49 Sun, 01 Jun 2025

Oscar Piastri of McLaren has secured pole position for Sunday’s Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona.
The Australian Formula 1 driver, currently leading the Drivers’ Championship, will once again start from the front row of the grid after recording the fastest time in Saturday’s (31/5) qualifying session.
Piastri set the quickest lap with a time of 1:11.546, narrowly edging out his teammate, Lando Norris of England, for pole. Norris clocked 1:11.755, just ahead of reigning world champion Max Verstappen of Red Bull, who qualified third with a time of 1:11.848.
Verstappen will be joined on the second row by George Russell of Mercedes, who posted a near-identical time. Lewis Hamilton of Ferrari and Antonio Kimi Antonelli of Mercedes will line up on the third row after qualifying fifth and sixth respectively.

Speaking after securing pole position, Piastri expressed his satisfaction with the result. “ I’m very happy,” said Piastri. “It’s been a good weekend so far. We didn’t start off too well and were struggling a bit, but I think we found some pace overnight, and today the car’s been mega.
“I feel like I’ve managed to put in some good laps too, so thanks to the team for all their hard work. This was a pretty miserable weekend 12 months ago, so to have turned it around like this is a great result.
“I don’t know if I necessarily did better today, but everything just came together – especially in the first half of the lap. The second half was about just holding on. It wasn’t a perfect lap, but with the tyres degrading so much around here, it’s tough to get everything spot on. I’m really pleased with the effort we put in.”

Stroll took part in qualifying at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, finishing the session in 14th place. The team confirmed a few hours later that he will miss the remainder of the weekend.
Lights out for Sunday’s Spanish Grand Prix is scheduled for 15:00 at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.
