The legendary Free State ultramarathon runner Louis Massyn will be chasing the record books this Sunday during the 98th edition of the Comrades Marathon.
This year’s race is once again a down-run, taking runners from Pietermaritzburg to Durban – but for Massyn, it holds special significance.

The 75-year-old, now based in George, will be aiming for his 50th Comrades medal. Having first run the iconic ultramarathon in 1973, Massyn is set to become the first person in history to complete the race 50 times.
Speaking to OFM Sport, Massyn said he’s feeling strong and well-prepared for the 89.98km challenge, and he extended his best wishes to all fellow runners.
“I’d like to thank each and every person for the support I’ve received over the past month, especially over the last few days,” said Massyn.
“I’m feeling great and really looking forward to race day. I want to wish every runner out there all the very best for Sunday’s 98th Comrades Marathon – from Pietermaritzburg down to Durban.
“I’m certainly going to have an epic day on the road. Good luck to each and every one of you.
“Thanks again for all the support. Kilometre greetings – Louis Massyn, runner 403, former Gouldveld Multi-Sport Club member from Welkom, now based in George and proudly running for the Outeniqua Harriers.”
The 2025 Comrades Marathon gets underway at 05:30 on Sunday morning.
