Crinums boosted by Pretorius return ahead of TNL title push─── MORGAN PIEK 09:07 Thu, 02 Apr 2026
Free State Crinums coach, Martha Mosoahle-Samm, is delighted to welcome a Proteas stalwart back into her squad ahead of the upcoming Telkom Netball League (TNL).
Netball legend Karla Pretorius has earned her place in the team that will be aiming to reclaim their title in South Africa’s premier netball competition.
Last season, when the Crinums finished runners-up, Pretorius was part of the management team, with much of her recent focus centred on coaching across various levels of the game. Now, she returns to the court, bringing with her a wealth of experience and leadership.

At 36, Pretorius remains one of the most respected figures in South African netball, having represented the Proteas in more than 120 Tests. Despite her iconic status, she still had to prove her worth at trials - a testament to both her professionalism and the competitive nature of the squad.
Mosoahle-Samm told OFM Sport that Pretorius’ influence extends far beyond match day.
“Having Karla back in the team is a massive boost - not just for the Crinums, but also for the legacy of the game,” said Mosoahle-Samm.
“Having experienced players return and plough back everything they’ve learned over the years, leading by example, makes our job as coaches so much easier.
“It really helps guide the younger players, and building a strong team culture becomes far simpler when you have leaders like that in your environment.
“Karla is a legend of the game. She’s played at the highest level, and we’re incredibly excited to see what she can bring. When she first spoke to me about this last year, I knew we were in for something special.”

While the return of Pretorius is a major boost, Mosoahle-Samm is equally excited about the fresh faces in the squad.
The Crinums also boast a solid core of experienced campaigners, including Refiloe Nketsa, Xandri Fourie, Karla Victor and Liamé de Lange, who will be key in leading from the front alongside Pretorius.
According to the coach, the blend of youth and experience bodes well for both the team’s system and its long-term development pipeline, with the TNL offering a prime platform for emerging talent.

“It’s really encouraging to see the number of youngsters coming through. It shows that our development pathway is in a strong place, and that’s something we’re very proud of,” she added.
“The girls are excited, and rightly so. Opportunities to play in competitions at this level don’t come around often, especially with the TNL being the highest level in South Africa.
“It’s a privilege for any player to be part of this team, and we’re all looking forward to what 2026 has in store. We’re hoping it’s going to be a great season.”
