France hold off South Africa to win FIH Nations Cup title─── MORGAN PIEK 08:34 Sun, 21 Jun 2026
France were crowned the 2026 FIH Nations Cup champions on Saturday night after edging hosts South Africa 2-1 in front of a packed Hartleyvale Stadium in Cape Town.
Thousands of supporters clad in green and gold filled the stadium in the shadow of Table Mountain creating a vibrant atmosphere as South Africa chased a first Nations Cup title on home soil. Despite a spirited second-half fightback, the hosts were left agonisingly short as France held on to lift the trophy.
The visitors made an impressive start and immediately imposed themselves on the contest. Their pace through midfield, sharp passing and relentless pressure forced South Africa onto the back foot from the opening whistle.

Goalkeeper Cullin de Jager, who enjoyed an outstanding tournament, was called into action early and produced several important saves to keep the hosts in the contest. However, France eventually made their dominance count.
The breakthrough came inside the opening eight minutes when Charlet converted from France’s first penalty corner. Moments later, Tynevez doubled the lead after another well-worked attack, leaving South Africa with a mountain to climb.
At 2-0 down, the hosts needed a response and gradually began to settle. Dayaan Cassiem looked dangerous whenever he was on the ball, while South Africa started to enjoy more possession and territory as the half progressed.
Although France carried their two-goal advantage into the break, South Africa had weathered the early storm and remained within striking distance.
The second half belonged largely to the hosts. Driven by the energy of the home crowd, South Africa played with greater intensity and purpose. They pressed higher up the field, moved the ball quicker and began to create genuine opportunities inside the French circle.
Hans Neethling, Jamie Seale and Cassiem all threatened as the pressure mounted. Penalty corners came and went, while the French defence was forced to absorb wave after wave of South African attack.

Despite the growing pressure, France remained organised and disciplined, defending resolutely when it mattered most.
The breakthrough South Africa desperately needed finally arrived in the final quarter. Cassiem produced a moment of brilliance, delivering a superb ball into the danger area where Sam Mvimbi finished clinically to make it 2-1.
Hartleyvale erupted as belief swept through the stands. With momentum firmly on their side, South Africa threw everything at France in search of an equaliser. The hosts attacked relentlessly during the closing stages, but the French defence held firm under immense pressure.

When the final hooter sounded, France celebrated a memorable triumph in Cape Town.
While there was disappointment for South Africa, there was also plenty of pride. The hosts reached a second FIH Nations Cup final and once again demonstrated the progress being made by the national side.
Earlier in the day, the Black Sticks of New Zealand claimed some silverware as well by winning the bronze medal after beating Japan 3-1 in the third-and-fourth place playoff.
