The Free State Crinums have laid down an early marker at the 2026 Telkom Netball League in Durban, delivering a polished performance to outclass defending champions, the Golden Fireballs, on Saturday night during round 2.
The Bloemfontein outfit, four-time champions of the competition, were in control for most of the encounter and powered their way to a convincing 59-42 win – a result that will certainly have the rest of the league taking notice.
The Crinums wasted little time stamping their authority on the game, but it was a ruthless second quarter that truly broke the contest open.
They surged ahead to a dominant 32-13 lead, with their defensive pressure and slick attacking play leaving the Fireballs chasing shadows.

The final whistle confirmed a comprehensive 59-42 victory for the Crinums – a composed, clinical display that underlines their status as serious contenders this season.

Their strong showing follows an equally emphatic start to the tournament on Friday night. The Crinums wrapped up Day 1 in style with a commanding 97-40 demolition of the Eastern Cape Aloes in a one-sided Division 1 clash.
They set the tone from the outset, opening up a 19-8 lead after the first quarter before extending that advantage to 38-15 at the break. Even when the Aloes showed improved energy in the second half, the Crinums remained firmly in control, pushing their lead out to 56-25 before cruising to a dominant finish.
Captain Karla Pretorius led from the front and was deservedly named Player of the Match after a standout defensive performance that anchored her side throughout.
