Less than 24 hours after opening their campaign with an emphatic victory over Malawi, the Spar Proteas produced another polished performance at The Hydro to underline that they are genuine contenders for a place in the semi-finals.

Before the tournament, most predictions centred around defending champions Australia and hosts England advancing from the so-called ‘group of death’. However, South Africa have quickly shown they are not in Scotland simply to make up the numbers. Their dominant start has sent a clear message to their rivals that they intend challenging the traditional powerhouses.

Watching proudly from the stands was former Proteas captain and current Team SA chef de mission Bongi Msomi, who witnessed a clinical display from a side growing in confidence with every outing.

The victory was also historic, with South Africa's tally of 96 goals setting a new Commonwealth Games scoring record for the national team.

The Proteas wasted little time asserting themselves, racing into a 26-15 lead after the opening quarter through slick ball movement, sharp shooting and relentless defensive pressure. They tightened their grip on the contest in the second period, extending their advantage to 51-23 at the half-time break as Tonga struggled to cope with the pace and intensity.

Although the third quarter was more evenly contested, South Africa still comfortably outscored their opponents 21-12 before finishing in emphatic fashion. They completely shut Tonga down in the final 15 minutes, conceding just seven goals while adding another 24 of their own to seal a comprehensive 54-goal victory.

Goal shooter Rolene Streutker led the scoring with an outstanding 51 goals, while Sammy Ngubane added 34 in another accurate shooting display. Kamogelo Maseko also contributed with 11 goals to round off an excellent team performance.

After two matches, South Africa sit just five goals behind Australia on the Pool A standings, highlighting just how competitive their opening performances have been.

The Proteas now turn their attention to Northern Ireland on Tuesday before facing the two decisive clashes that are expected to determine the semi-final places. They take on Australia on Wednesday before meeting hosts England on Thursday in what promise to be two cracking encounters.
