Heymans produced a spectacular winning throw of 80.50m to claim the gold medal, smashing his previous personal best by more than three metres and underlining his status as one of the brightest young talents in the event.

The South African was already in command after opening with 76.92m – a distance that would ultimately have been enough to secure victory. But Heymans was not content to sit back.

He backed up that opening effort by sending every one of his remaining five throws beyond 76 metres, showing remarkable consistency under the pressure of a championship final.

His fifth-round effort of 79.42m pushed his personal best into new territory, but Heymans saved his biggest moment for last.

With his final throw, he unleashed 80.50m to add more than a metre to his newly established PB and seal his place in the history books. The mark ranks as the fourth-farthest winning throw ever recorded in the men’s javelin at the World U20 Championships.

India’s Ashish Yadav claimed silver with a best of 74.09m, produced with his third attempt.

The bronze medal went to Dominica’s Addison James, who produced a national record of 73.89m.

James’ performance was historic in its own right, making him the first athlete from Dominica to win a World U20 Championships medal.

But the night belonged to Heymans, who combined power, consistency and a spectacular final throw to turn his pre-championship favourite tag into a gold medal – and announce himself as a name to watch on the international stage.

Meanwhile, on Saturday night, Bloemfontein's teenage sprint sensation Rumé Burger will run in the final of the women's 200m. Burger ran a personal best of 23.17 seconds in for the fast time in her heat. In the semi-finals the former senior women's 200m national champion qualified for the final in a time on 23.18 seconds.

Saturday's final in Eugene will take place at 20:30.
