Shimlas edge Ixias at FNB Stadium─── MORGAN PIEK 08:55 Tue, 15 Mar 2016
A last minute Marco Mason penalty saw the defending champions, the University of the Free State Shimlas, retain their impressive unbeaten run in the Varsity Cup, albeit with a narrow 10-9 win over rivals, the Central University of Technology Ixias.
The tournament resumed at the FNB Stadium in Soweto yesterday afternoon, with all eight teams in action at the iconic venue of the 2010 FIFA World Cup final.
Meyer van Tonder opened the scoring at Soccer City with a penalty for the Ixias, however, the champs took a 7-6 lead into half-time courtesy of a Mosolwa Mafuma try.
Van Tonder slotted another penalty late in the game, however, it’s Mason’s three-pointer which secured the match for Hendro Scholtz’s chargers.
In the second game, the North West University Pukke hammered the Madibaz 46-18.
The University of Pretoria Tuks were too strong for the University of Johannesburg with a 43-8 drubbing.
And it was Maties who claimed the bragging rights in the Cape derby with a 60-13 pounding of the University of Cape Town Ikeys.
