Cheetahs run riot against Ulster─── MORGAN PIEK 21:23 Sat, 05 Oct 2019
The winger, Anthony Volmink, was the hat-trick hero for the Toyota Cheetahs in Bloemfontein on Saturday evening as they thumped Ulster 63-26 in round two of the Guinness PRO14.
The speedster played a large part in the Cheetahs claiming back-to-back wins in the 2019/20 PRO14, and also in beating the Irish outfit for the first time.
The win sees the Cheetahs at the top of the standings in Conference A with 10 points from their two games to date.
Volmink got the home team on the board in the 9th minute for his first try in a Cheetahs jersey.
The new man at the Cheetahs, Volmink, showed his class again in the 23rd minute with a couple of great steps to run in for a solo effort for what was his brace. Ulster struck back minutes later when the former Wallabies lock, Sam Carter, got the team from Belfast on the board.
Rhyno Smith went over for the first of his two tries on the evening, and once again the captain, Ruan Pienaar, added the conversion.
Shortly before the break and after sustained pressure, the Cheetahs hooker, powered over from his try and the teams’ bonus-point. This saw the Cheetahs leading Ulster 28-7 at half time.
Three minutes into the second stanza, Volmink, intercepted an Ulster pass to run in for his hat-trick try. Minutes later the replacement loose-forward, Jasper Wiese, broke the line for a 60 metre to send Smith over for his brace. It was Smith’s second brace in two games, and this also led to him winning back-to-back man of the match awards.
Junior Pokomela then stepped a couple of defence to send Louis Fouché for his try. This time, Tian Schoeman, converted the try.
Ulster mounted a comeback attempted, with James Hume and David Shanahan each crossing the white-wash.
The Cheetahs did, however, take some control back and this led to a Reinach Venter try, as well as, a penalty try. The Ulster did have the final say when the winger, Craig Gilroy, scored on the stroke of full-time for the bonus-point.
The Cheetahs next face Munster in Bloemfontein on Friday evening. Kick-off at the Toyota Stadium is at 18:15.
