White Lightning humbled by 3rd Warwickshire accolade─── MORGAN PIEK 11:35 Thu, 30 Jul 2020
The Proteas and Free State cricketing great, Allan Donald, has been honoured by his former county team, Warwickshire, for a third time.
Donald, who now heads up the VKB Knights at the head coach, was named as the Bears' greatest fast bowler of all time.
ICC Hall of Famer played for the Birmingham-based team for 13 seasons spanning from 1987 to 2000.
During this time White Lighting claimed a total of 536 first-class scalps at an average of 20.82, and in One-day cricket, he took 245 wickets at an average of 19.21.
Donald told OFM Sport that the late-great Bob Woolmer was the driving force behind his success.
“I’m absolutely gobsmacked really,”
“It’s a great feeling when fans, members and ex-players value the work you have done for a long period of time.
“It’s a massive thank you to other guys who made it happen for me really.
“When Bob Woolmer was on the scene and came into Warwickshire I think he changed things around for me. The way I looked at things, my preparation, my motivation and drive was a big factor in Warwickshire’s success.
“To be involved in three of these accolades is just extremely humbling. It is just a magnificent club that has given me a lot of stuff to work with, and their faith in me over the years has paid off.
“I don’t know what more you can say thank you for. It certainly has been a great journey.
“Those mid-90s when Warwickshire was so powerful and dominant in English Country Cricket was an enormous factor in my success. My excitement coming back to Warwickshire every season was something I looked forward to. You know, just being back with those guys again was a great motivational factor.
“It was a wonderful team and wonderful era to have played in, and just to share in those guys' success was just even better.”
Recently he was also named Warwickshire's best overseas player of all time, while he and Gladstone Small were named as the best opening pair of all time.
