Province ready to finally face the Sharks─── MORGAN PIEK 15:00 Tue, 19 Jan 2021
The Currie Cup has reached its business end with the semi-finals of the world’s oldest domestic competition taking place this week.
The action will kick-off on Saturday afternoon with a Jukskei derby at Loftus Versfeld between the Bulls and their neighbours, the Lions. The action in Pretoria gets underway at 14:00.
Then it’s over to Cape Town where the team with the most Currie Cup titles, Western Province, hosts the Sharks.
It’s will be the first time that these two sides get to face each other since rugby in South Africa resumed in October due to both of the matches in the SuperRugby Unlocked series and the Currie Cup having been called off due to Covid-19.
Furthermore, for Province, it will be somewhat of an emotional outing as it may very well be their last game ever at Newlands. This in itself can serve as extra motivation heading into the knockout clash.
Province assistant coach, Dawie Snyman, says they are delighted to finally play against the Sharks, and they have been preparing to face the team from Durban for quite some time now.
“We’ve prepared for the Sharks for two previous games that didn’t happen. Luckily now it will be happening.
“It almost feels like a month now that we have been preparing. There were three previous sessions and there were sessions this week as well.
“The plans will stay the same, so that is actually nice. We didn’t have to change too much in our prep for the week.
“It’s going to really nice to get onto the field and play against them.”
Head coach, John Dobson, will be naming his side for the semi-final on Thursday.
Kick-off at Newlands in the Mother City is at 16:30 on Saturday afternoon.
