Wegner upbeat ahead of Cheetahs' preseason─── MORGAN PIEK 08:54 Mon, 01 Feb 2021
The 2020/21 Currie Cup is a thing of the past following the Bulls hard-fought victory over the Sharks at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday.
In the Toyota Cheetahs camp, it is back to business with the team officially starting their preseason for the planned Franchise Cup.
The Cheetahs had three weeks away from the game, but they now look to the future as we await SA Rugby to outline the proposed tournament.
The Treviso-bound Carl Wegner, who led the Cheetahs in the Currie Cup, told OFM Sport that the break was welcome.
“Everyone enjoyed some time with their family and getting over not making it through to the semi-finals and even potential final.
“That is all in the past and now we are going to be working on new fixtures coming our way, and hopefully, SA Rugby can confirm that for us in the near future.
“I've seen a few guys in the gym and on the field this past week. We've been grafting and getting the fitness levels up again.
“That in itself says a lot about the players and the vibe in the camp. Everyone is excited about this year and the new plan that SA Rugby has for everyone.
“We’ve proven a lot and especially to the fans that we can compete against the so-called big four.”
The Cheetahs will officially report back at training on Wednesday. The four new players joining on Wednesday are Jean Droste, Rynier Bernardo (both locks), Alulutho Tshakweni and Schalk Ferreira (both loosehead props).
