Griquas edge sloppy Cheetahs─── MORGAN PIEK 14:22 Fri, 11 Jun 2021
The Tafel Lager Griquas edged a sloppy Toyota Cheetahs 23-19 in Kimberley to win the Currie Cup warm-up match ahead of the series which starts next week.
The Griquas made the better of their chances in the match, while the Cheetahs in their turn did not execute their lineout, and in doing some blew chances for more points on numerous occasions.
This in an area of the game where the Cheetahs coach, Hawies Fourie, wanted to see an improvement on following their 74-7 win against the EP Elephants last week.
While it is only a warm-up game, it will no doubt give them a lot of confidence heading into the Currie Cup. More importantly, for their second-round match while will be against the Cheetahs at Tafel Lager Park.
Daniel Kasende, Gideon van der Merwe and Reagan Oranje all scored tries for the Peacock Blues, while Derik Pretorius, Wilmar Arnoldi and Hencus van Wyk all crossed the whitewash for the visitors.
The Griquas will host the Sharks next week Saturday in their opening match of the Currie Cup. The Cheetahs will have a first-round bye and it remains to be seen if they will organise one last warm-up game.
